Kristin Smith continues her investigation in to the concept of an intelligent body as inspired by the research of scientist Candace B. Pert. Smith envisions the body’s thoughts to be realized through movement; Bodies of Thought is a photographic series highlighting evidence of this intelligence by creating a visual map of the body’s thought process.
Bodies of Thought first began in Calgary featuring professional dancer Naomi Brand. During her residency in San Francisco, Smith has expanded the work to include those without professional movement training in order to address the intelligence inherent in all bodies. Through the documentation of volunteer improvisers from the Bay Area, the artist also reveals the expressive capacity of the untrained body while exploring the spectrum of ability and individuality within the group.

About the Artist:
Kristin Smith is an interdisciplinary artist who has long been fascinated by our unnamable physical sensations and their relationship to our awareness. Alternately embracing and confronting the ephemerality of human life, Smith explores both the experience and concept of time. Through performance, photography, and video installation, Smith investigates the complex constellation of relationships between mind, body, experience, and consciousness.
Kristin Smith comes from a diverse artistic background, combining her love of physical theatre and visual art. Smith recently received her Art MFA in Mixed Media from the University of Calgary, during which time she also participated in Interrarium, an interdisciplinary residency at the Banff Centre (2008). Her performance work was presented as a part of E-Merge for the Fluid Movement Arts Festival (2008), and she also enjoyed collaborating with companies such as kloetzel&co (Calgary & New York) and W&M Physical Theatre (Calgary & Poland) throughout her time in Calgary. Smith earned her BA in both Theatre Arts and Art from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. While in Minneapolis, Smith directed and performed for the Minnesota Fringe Festival, The Varsity Theatre, and also trained under Kari Margolis.
CELLspace is located at 2050 Bryant Street in San Francisco’s Mission district. For more information please inquire via email at TheIntelligentBody@gmail.com
